All the veggies are loving this weather
There has been so much growth on all the veggies this past week and a lot of it is a result of the fantastic weather we have had.
The days have been in the high-80s and the nights in the mid-50s which the fall veggies love since it doesn’t stress them out as much and the summer veggies are still going strong.
For many of the fall veggies we have been able to get them weeded which is a massive help in addition to the weather as they have less competition and can take more of the water and photosynthesis that is available.
We will have our first fall veggie at the farmers market today and it is radishes. There are many other veggies that we will likely start harvesting in the coming weeks.
The hours for the Wednesday Davis Farmers Market have changed to 3-6 p.m. as Picnic in the Park has ended for the season.
We also will have some gorgeous tomatoes at market today and this weekend as the plants seemed to ripen a lot of the later fruit on the plants. We even are starting to harvest from our fourth planting which is much smaller than the previous ones but has lots of large green tomatoes on it.
With the nice weather the past few weeks the cherry tomatoes and eggplant have produced a lot of flowers and they are now turning into fruit we are able to harvest.
A big task one-time fall task we accomplished is seeding our overwintered onions. These onions will be transplanted in the field in November and then some of them should be ready to harvest for spring onions next May.
Overwintered onions have a milder oniony flavor on them and even though they take a little longer to be ready to harvest than spring planted they allow us to have onions earlier in the year since we likely will run out of this year’s crop by December.
Even though its only mid-September we seeded less lettuce in the greenhouse this week than previous weeks. The successions the past few weeks have been pretty large so we will have a lot of lettuce to transplant in the coming weeks in addition to the 2,000 we planted in the field on Monday.
It’s crazy that next week is the last seeding in the greenhouse for the fall and its fitting that it is lettuce. There still will be crops we direct seed in the field for another seven weeks and we still have to transplant all these veggies in the greenhouse out in the field.
