Back at the Farmers Market Saturday

The veggies have been loving the sunny, warm days after the rain and are ready to start being harvested after a five week break.

Our veggies and us will be back at the Saturday Davis Farmers Market starting this Saturday, February 3, in our spot under the cover.

There is an exciting diversity of veggies we will be harvesting for the market including carrots, red butter lettuce, spinach, turnips, kale, broccoli and cabbage.

For the month of February we will only be at the Saturday market and in March we will be back at the Wednesday market.

We are out of onions and garlic but leeks won’t be the only allium we have at market with the green garlic being ready to harvest. It has a delicate garlic flavor that can be substituted in wherever garlic bulbs are called for in a recipe and you can use the tender leaves in addition to the white part of it.

We planted this garlic about a month earlier than our main planting which will grow into heads of garlic while we harvest the green garlic.

Ahead of the forecasted rainstorm today and more predicted in a few days we got some necessary work done in the fields.

The first carrots, spinach, beets, turnips, bok choy, arugula and radishes of 2024 were direct seeded in the field yesterday. They went into the ground five days later than we had hoped for but the soil needed those days to dry out from the previous rains.

The last few days of sun and high 60s temperatures helped the soil dry out enough so we could get the tractor in to prep it .

There also was lots of seeding to be done in the greenhouse this week. We seeded the main planting of eggplant along with onions and shallots.

We are trying a different variety of shallots this year in hopes we get a better crop of them this year.

Additionally another succession of lettuce was planted and more parsley.

Some of our first seedings are getting closer to being ready to be transplanted after the rains.
