Busy September on the farm

One of the busiest times on the farm in a year is September.

Summer crops are still needing our attention to harvest while fall crops need to get planted and some are even ready to harvest.

Many of our summer crops are starting to slow down in what they are producing but that doesn’t mean we can stop harvesting them yet. We still want to have as many tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and basil at the market as we bridge the gap to fall crops.

Tuesday we transplanted around 1,500 plants which featured chard, dino kale, red russian kale, green curly kale, broccolini, cabbage and broccoli. Some of these crops will be ready to harvest in a month and others won’t be ready until late-November,

As the number of hours of daylight reduce every day all the crops will take longer to grow so we are planting more at one and in quick succession so we hopefully can have a continuous supply in the winter.

We also direct seeded our second planting of carrots along with our next successions of radishes, turnips, spinach, bok choy and arugula.

The first radishes we seeded are ready to harvest and we brought a few bunches to market last Saturday. We’ll have lots more this week at all of our markets plus some turnips and bunches of arugula.

Over the weekend we mowed down our green beans as the season for us has come to an end. That area will soon be planted with garlic!

Another crop we sold out of is our red onions as we had an unfortunately smaller harvest than we were planning for.

After the cool days with the rain we have returned to the heat but fortunately its only in the low 90s and not triple digits. The temperatures does cool down at night which our fall crops are enjoying.
