Carrots and planting cover crops
Over the last few weeks we’ve been harvesting a bounty of fall crops but we’ve been missing one key fall crop.
That is carrots. We had hoped to be able to start harvesting carrots a few weeks ago but they were still sizing up so we have had to wait to begin harvesting them.
We had a sneak peak of the first carrots at this past Saturday market where we brought a handful of bunches
Starting today we will be harvesting more of them and hopefully have a consistent supply at both of our markets.
We planted a number of successions in an attempt to always have carrots that are ready to harvest all fall and winter into the spring when the ones we plant in January are ready to be harvested.
Our last fall crop we haven’t started to harvest is cauliflower and we will be picking the first few of them for market this Saturday!
Monday we were able to get all of our open fields seeded with cover crop ahead of a forecast of a little rain on Tuesday in case it was too wet for our tractor to go in the field after it.
There ended up being a negligible amount of rain as our rain gauge had nothing in it but the fields showed a tiny bit of moisture.
Over the next four days there is a decent forecast of rain with possibly over an inch combined on Friday and Saturday.
That should help germinate the cover crop seeds and start slowly growing even in the cool weather.
A few sunny days after the forecasted rain will help everything grow quicker, including the weeds.
Next week the Wednesday Davis Farmers Market will have extended hours from 11 am to 5 pm with it being the day before Thanksgiving. We will have lots of all our fall veggies so you’ll be able to come get the freshest veggies for the next day’s meal or just to restock your fridge.
