Direct seeding and getting seed potatoes

The weather this past week has been unseasonable warm and the rest of the week will continue to be warm with highs of 77 and sunny.

On Sunday we drove over to Full Belly Farm in the Capay Valley to pick up the seed potatoes we had added on to their order. Full Belly and Riverdog Farm do a joint order of seed potatoes from Zuckerman Family Farms in Stockton so they can fill a whole truck instead of two half-full trucks.

We picked up two 100 pound bags of a white potato called Sifra. The creamy flavor is excellent on these potatoes and we are very excited that we were able to get some to plant for this spring.

The tractor has been used a lot to help us mow down cover crop and prep the soil over the last week as every week we will be needing more beds. The rototiller got new tines on it and that has made it create a better seedbed for our seeds and transplants.

We direct seeded our second succession of some crops yesterday into those just made beds. The carrots in this planting might be the first we harvest as they are a different variety than the previous once and take about a month less time grow to the point we harvest them.

Our first transplants are getting close to being planted in the field. We are beginning the process of getting them used to the outside weather by keeping them outside during the day instead of in the protected environment of the greenhouse.

The crops we direct seeded two weeks ago have been starting to germinate over the past week. Radishes, turnips, bok choy and spinach are all popping out of the soil and loving the warm days.

We have also had lots of seeds germinate in our greenhouse. Many trays of onions, shallots, leeks, lettuce, broccoli as well as the first few seeds of tomatoes and eggplants.
