Harvesting lots of Early Girls, Sungolds, Cucumbers and Basil

The last couple of weeks there have been a handful of Early Girl tomatoes to be picked and now the first flush of them is starting to come in.

Thanks to the heat wave last week and the hot days the last few days the Early Girls have been ripening much quicker.

Having so many green tomatoes on them we’ve been waiting on them to turn red which has happened agonizingly slow for looking at them many times every day.

It is really great they are ripening and the most exciting part for us is how good the plants look so far. They are much bigger and healthier plants than last year along with all of our other tomatoes.

While the first few Early Girls are coming in, there are lots of sungolds that are ripening every day. Last week we harvest a good amount and this week it will be at least double the amount of sungolds and other cherry tomatoes.

In the earliest planting the only cherry tomato is sungolds so there are many more of them than our Sweet 100s, Juliets and mixed cherry tomatoes.

Those other varieties have lots of trusses of green tomatoes on them so in the coming weeks they will be joining the sungolds in the tomato party that is starting now.

The tomatoes are coming in about 2-3 weeks earlier than last year and in larger quantities which was our goal for this year.

Going along perfectly with the tomatoes in almost any dish is the basil which is loving this weather. The Genovese basil is growing so quickly that it needs to be harvested very often so there is plenty for you to add to any dish or begin making fresh pesto.

Another great veggie that goes great with tomatoes is cucumbers and all three of the varieties we are growing are delicious and able to be used in many different ways.

The striped armenian or painted serpent cukes are the most popular one with an amazing flavor and their very unique look since they technically are a melon.

Suyo Long cucumbers are crispy and have sweet flavor perfect for eating fresh or can be pickled. The slicing cucumber we grow looks like any other slicing cuke that can be found in the store but is more delicious and refreshing than other ones.

It seems like every week for June there is a new crop we are starting to bring to market with early red burger onions last Saturday and this coming weekend we will have a few eggplants and maybe a small amount of figs.

On Wednesdays we also bring some bunches of flowers to the market made up of zinnias, marigolds and celosia.
