Harvesting new crops, peppers and weather swings
The past week has seen pretty big weather swings from the first day above 90 degrees to windy days with lows around 40.
With the hot days and wind we have had to run lots of irrigation to make sure the plants get enough water and especially for the transplants we have planted in the past week.
Most of the crops have loved the warm weather and growing really well although they have a slight slant on some of them due to the wind.
After reaching 90 degrees the temperature has cooled off the past couple of days with daytime highs in the 60s and nighttime lows down to 39 degrees. The cool temperatures also brought along lots of wind with it consistently around 20 miles per hour and gusting over 30 mph. On Monday for a few seconds it rained before the raincloud moved on.
We are starting to harvest a few crops for the first time this week which is exciting. The first bunches of dino kale and chard will be at the Davis Farmers Market this afternoon along with the scallions and head lettuce. The head lettuce is really a sight to see, we planted a mix from a seed company and we will be able to harvest all different kinds, colors and even speckled lettuce from the bed. There may also be a few baskets of sugar snap peas at the market.
Last Friday we planted five beds of the first peppers of the season and in a month or so we will plant a second batch of peppers to help us have a consistent harvest throughout the season. The first planting of peppers was over half Jimmy Nardellos and a sweet snacking pepper called Lunchbox. The last couple beds were filled with small amounts of pimento, gypsy, bell and shishito peppers. We are excited to see how they do and looking forward to eating them all summer long.
There is a chance of rain in two of the next three days but only a small amount is forecasted which won’t affect our plan to plant our second succession of tomatoes along with other crops in the next few days.
