Lots and Lots of Planting
The focus this past week has solely been on preparing to plant and then planting those areas with a wide variety of crops.
The big crop we got into the ground was our potatoes for the spring. We planted 200 pounds of them in trenches and after covering them with a few inches of soil gave them a good watering. Luckily the potatoes we got are sized so that we didn’t have to cut any of them up and could just toss them into the trench every 6-10 inches.
All of the bunching greens for the spring were planted which was really exciting. Chard, Red Russian Kale, Dino Kale and Collards are the ones we are growing this year. We also planted another batch of lettuce as well as cabbage and broccoli.
To continue all the planting we did and keep up on succession planting, we seeded another batch of our direct seeded crops in the field. It seems crazy but after yesterday we have seeded all the carrots in the field that we will harvest through June and we will next plant some in August for the fall and winter.
The first tomatoes we seeded are still weeks away from being transplanted but we also seeded our second succession of tomatoes this week. It is our largest planting of tomatoes for the year and has the most amount of varieties.
Yesterday we got a few sprinkles of rain throughout the day and then in the area when we were driving home it started to rain a little bit harder.
Almost all of the cover crop on the fields has been mowed even if we are not going to plant in those fields right away since the cover crop is starting to flower. It’s a good signal to mow so that the cover crop doesn’t produce seeds.
