Planting the first transplants in the field
The crops we seeded in the greenhouse at the start of January have begun to be planted out in the field.
Last Friday we planted a bed of Little Gem lettuce along with a bed of Caraflex cabbage. Before we planted them we let them be outside for a few days during the day and overnight for a day so they could harden off and lessen the shock they get when transplanted.
This week the weather has been very warm and the fruit trees around the farm have begun to blossom. The first two to blossom were the almond trees and others have since started to blossom.
It is really exciting to watch crops grow from seeds to plants that we planted in the field and then in a little bit we will be able to harvest them. The greenhouse is still full of spring crops along with a number of summer crops.
We will be planting lots more beds of transplants out at the end of this week as everything is growing quicker with the warm weather. Cabbage, two types of kale, collards and green onions are on the docket to be planted in the next few weeks.
Peppers were the main crop we seeded this week along with our second to last succession of cabbage and broccoli for the spring.
At this point the majority of the cover crops on the farm have been mowed and the remaining areas will be mowed in the coming weeks to prepare for summer crops.
