Preparing for 2023!

It’s the last week of the year and probably our slowest week of the year. With Christmas this past Sunday and rain yesterday we’ve been taking a little bit of a break from working on the farm.

Taking that little break has been very nice and during that time we have been working on getting everything ready for the new year.

We’ve been able to get a lot of the admin work done that we needed to do before the start of the new year so we don’t have to worry about getting it done while we are busy with other tasks.

Throughout the year we built a lit of different small tools or other things we wanted to buy that we thought would help us. Some of them are simple things like long gloves and an apron for washing our root vegetables which have already proven valuable.

Others are much larger purchases like new crates and a precision seeder. In the fall when we still had summer crops going strong and our first fall crops we did not have enough crates so we were using wax boxes which are not the best,

The precision seeder was costly but it will help us space our direct seeded crops out better when we plant them. The seeder we used this year over seeded most beds and planted lots of clumps of seeds with gaps in between.

We have been super lucky to use the tractor that the former farmer Lloyd had this year and now we have bought the tractor and its implements.

Just a reminder that we won’t be at farmers markets this week or any week in January, The current plan is to be back at markets at the start of February once our crops are ready to harvest.

We got over an inch and a half of rain Monday night and Tuesday morning which was fantastic. We forecasted to get another two plus inches of rain over the next week.

With the rain it will move back our next chance to get into the fields to weed and plant. Once it wards up and the soil dries out a little bit after the storm we will have lots of weeding to do as the weeds will grow much faster with the warm temperatures after the rain.
