Rain and tomato explosion!

It rained on Sunday and until it actually happened we didn’t trust the forecast to be true since it rarely ever rains in June.

We got one-eighth of an inch of rain in the early morning which was really nice and the plants all loved it. We happily changed up our plan for the day so that the soil could dry out a little bit before we got the tractor out to mow.

The next few days the temperature will climb into the triple digits and stay there for three days including a forecasted temperature of 108 degrees for Friday.

Our summer crops loved the cooler temperatures this past weekend and the fruit they have is ripening fast in the heat.

We will have a good amount of cherry tomatoes and Early Girls at both the Davis and Benicia Farmers Markets this week. The tomatoes keep tasting better and better plus we will have some of our heirlooms coming in soon along with our second planting of everything.

The peppers, cucumbers and eggplant all have lots of flowers on the plants along with a few fruit that are ripening or already fully mature. We harvested a few of two of the varieties of cucumbers we are growing and they are delicious.

Our spring crops are dwindling as we mowed a whole host of them this past week including all of the spinach and a lot of lettuce beds. We still have two plantings of lettuce left which we have started harvesting off of and hopefully we can do so for another week but that is very dependent on the heat.

Some of the other spring crops we still are bringing to market are carrots, chard, kale, beets, scallions and fennel.

Last Friday we got all of our winter squash planted which was really exciting and we also planted 2,000 sweet potato slips. We didn’t plan on growing any sweet potatoes this year but our family’s farm had extras so we decided to plant some of them in a space that we didn’t have any plans to plant in this summer or fall.
