Seeding the first tomatoes!

Seeding is a super exciting part of farming for us as it is the start of the journey of growing the plant. It was even more exciting Monday as we seeded the first round of tomatoes for this year!

Tomatoes are one of our favorite crops to grow and eat. For us they are one of the joys of summer and we have planned three plantings for this year. We will be planting at least 11 different varieties of tomatoes this year, including cherry tomatoes, and we had to stop ourselves from getting a lot more varieties.

We also seeded a lot of lettuce, fennel, cabbage, parsley and broccoli which is making the tables in the greenhouse start to fill up as we continue to seed more every week.

The warm and consistent weather is allowing us to start getting into the field and most likely next week we will direct seed carrots, beets and lots of other crops.

Almost two-thirds of the fruit trees around the farm have been pruned over the last two weeks by Lloyd and Jose. On Monday we moved all the branches into a pile off to the side to clear room for mowing.

Yesterday Andrew got to drive the tractor for the first time and mowed down a section of one field that was completely weeds along with the edges around another field.

Over the next few weeks we will be on the tractor often mowing down most of the cover crop on the farm in preparation for planting.
