The first day of Spring was yesterday and while the weather still is rainy, the lettuce in the field is bringing lots of color and smiles.

While some crops are growing slowly and not yet ready to harvest, we have lots of lettuce that is ready to harvest with plenty more coming soon.

The lettuce we are harvesting right now we transplanted into the field last November. So it survived the cold December and January before starting to grow once the temperatures warmed up a little bit.

We transplanted around 5,000 plants of lettuce at the end of January which is growing much quicker than the earlier lettuce so it is not that far behind in being ready to harvest.

Plus we have been transplanting all the lettuce we have seeded this year whenever we have the opportunity to get into the field between rains.

Right now and for the next few weeks at least we will have a small selection of lettuce varieties before our other ones are ready to harvest.

The main one we have is our red butter lettuce which is a gorgeous head lettuce that has silky leaves that are great in a salad or on a sandwich or just eaten plain. We actually have two vanities of red butter with one of them being shinier than the other, they both taste delicious.

Our green little gem lettuce is supper crunchy and a mix between a romaine and butter lettuce.

We also have a red little gem which is similar to the green one although a little less crunchy.

In other exciting news we will have our first cauliflower at the market starting this coming Saturday. They are on the smaller side as the plants did not grow as large as we hoped for over winter with the colder temperatures.

Additionally we will have a little bit of spinach at market Saturday.

Before the rain Sunday and Tuesday which combined to be over two inches we were able to get some work done in the field.

We mowed a good amount of cover crop to start preparing the field for all the crops in the greenhouse that are waiting to be transplanted and all the direct seeding we need to do.

With the warmer weather the weeds have been growing just as much as the veggies. so it was very good to get all of our onions and most of our cauliflower weeded before the rain so the plants can grow without competing with the weeds.
