So Much to Harvest and Starting at the Benicia Farmers’ Market
This time of the year is such a great time for vegetables as spring crops are thriving and the first summer crops will be ready to harvest in a few weeks due to the warmer spring.
It comes at the perfect time for us as we start selling at a second farmers market this week and some of the other tasks on the farm need less time so we are able to spend more time harvesting.
Tomorrow, April 28, we’ll be at the Benicia Farmers’ Market from 4-8 p.m. on 1st Street in between B & E D Street. We’ll have a lot of veggies there including our first red butter lettuce which tastes and looks incredible, carrots, sugar snap peas and shelling peas.
We’ll also be at the Davis Farmers Market today with a bounty of veggies including a few bunches of carrots, lots of lettuce, greens and parsley.
In the next week or two we will also have our first broccoli along with cabbage. The potatoes will be ready to harvest soon after as they are just starting to flower!
All of the spring crops are loving the warm weather and growing fast so we hope they are ready to harvest before it gets so hot that they bolt.
Also loving the weather has been the weeds so we have been working on staying on top of the weeding to make it easier for ourselves in the future.
We have one at least one planting of all our summer crops in the ground and they are growing steadily. Winter squash is the one crop we haven’t planted yet but we will do so in the coming weeks.
This past weekend we hilled the potatoes to promote more potatoes to be produced and keeps them away from the sun which can turn potatoes green.
