Tractor work before the rain and fog
After all this sunny winter weather we had not gotten to the point at this time of the year where the foggy weather lasts all day until the last few days.
The hills to the west of us that we get to look at all day long have been obstructed by the fog and even the closer hills are hidden behind the fog.
Adding to the peaceful atmosphere we have had while weeding lettuce and spinach over the past few days has been the lack of any tractors working around us due to the soil being too muddy for a big tractor after the rain on Saturday.
Last Friday the ground had dried out enough from the previous rain thanks to the sunny days that we were able to get the tractor into some of our fields and mow them.
After mowing the areas which had some grass and plant debris in it we spread a light layer of compost over the sections. We have the compost pile covered with a tarp so that the rain doesn’t cause it to get too wet and potentially have some nutrients leave in the water.
We try to batch together all the tractor tasks so we don’t have to bring out every day for quick tasks and can keep an attachment on while we do large sections instead of constantly changing what tool is attached to it.
By applying compost we have added a step in the process of preparing the field to be planted or seeded so we are trying to get the field work started earlier.
We don’t have a compost spreader so we are using wheel barrows to move the compost and spread it with shovels and rakes. Of course we had the compost put in the back corner of the farm and the places we are putting it now are towards the front so it is a good walk with each wheelbarrow load.
After the rain this upcoming week and next week we will have to wait until the soil dries out before we disc it to break up all the clods and then roto till it.
Then the soil will be ready for us to direct seed into it which we hope to do at the end of next week but it is almost certainly going to be pushed back unless we don’t get the forecasted rain.
It won’t be too long into February until our first veggies we started in the greenhouse will be ready to transplant. They are growing really well so far.
This week we seeded more lettuce and cabbage in the greenhouse for our second successions of both crops.
