Watching plants grow!!

We see thousands of plants growing every day and ever time a new plant pops out from the soil is just as exciting as the previous one!

It is a pretty amazing thing when you think about how planting a seed in the soil turns into a plant that we harvest and then eat.

The difference between the seeds we plant in the ground and the ones in the greenhouse is very interesting. The ones in the greenhouse get the added benefit of potting soil and are not exposed to the weather including staying warmer which makes them grow quicker.

Seeds in the soil outside take much longer to germinate and have many added challenges including weeds competing with them for water and nutrients to grow.

So why don’t we start everything in the greenhouse?

Well, some crops including carrots grow very differently when they are transplanted and it would be a lot more work to transplant than direct seeds carrots, turnips and radishes among others.

The one crop we do direct seed and transplant is spinach to try to get it a little earlier than what we direct seed.

The greenhouse is looking pretty full right now with a wide variety of crops including our first tomatoes which are just starting to germinate after two weeks.

We also seeded our first peppers and basil of the year this week!

There are lots of lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, chard and kale in the greenhouse getting closer to being ready to transplant.

It was great to be back at the Davis farmers Market on Saturday and we will be there every Saturday from now on. We also will be at the Wednesday market starting today with the freshest veggies you can get!

Last Thursday night we got 3/8” of rain which was very nice and then another 1/8” on Saturday night. The plants loves the rain and with us getting a lot of weeding done hopefully they will continue to grow well.
