A new flush of tomatoes and changing weather
Most of our tomatoes are starting to slow down with the weather cooling off but our final planting is just starting to produce some gorgeous, large tomatoes.
It is so exciting to be harvesting these fantastic tomatoes off a planting that we were not sure how many tomatoes we would be able to harvest.
The tomatoes ripen much slower later so we knew we would have a shorter harvest season for this planting that was dependent on the weather and even though its been a little cooler than we expected they have been producing really well.
We only planted two varieties of tomatoes in this planting, Marvel Stripe and Black Krim. These are two very strong producers that we were confident would do better than some other varieties in slightly cooler weather.
Saturday morning there was the slightest sprinkle really early but it didn’t even register on our rain gauge. What we enjoyed most was how cool of a day it was not reaching 70 degrees.
That little bit of moisture we got was gone relatively quickly as it was followed by a couple of windy days.
The temperature is warming back up into the mid-90s with Saturday being forecasted to be 97 degrees. Many of our summer crops that have been slowing down will enjoy a nice boost from the warm weather to produce their final veggies of the season over the coming weeks.
After starting to harvest most of our fall veggies there are not too many left we are still waiting for and on Friday we will harvest the first spinach of the fall.
While we are harvesting all those fall veggies we are still direct seeding some of them. The ones we direct seeded likely won’t be ready to harvest until 2024.
We also did a large transplanting of lettuce which is filling up lots of space on the farm. We have a few more plantings that need to get planted but we are done seeding in the greenhouse.
The cucumbers and okra are now showing significant signs of slowing down the amount we are harvesting from them. We still will have them at market but they will be in limited quantities.
In addition to being at the farmers market on Saturday we will also be attending the Hoes Down Festival at Full Belly Farm. We will be doing a workshop about starting a small farm at 4:30 pm.
