First seeding of 2022!!
It has been a very exciting start to 2022 for both of us as we have been out on the farm every day and Monday we were able to seed eight trays of vegetables in the greenhouse.
One of the trays was seeded with Caraflex Cabbage which sometimes is called ‘Wakefield’. It is a pointy and tender cabbage with a sweet, mild flavor that both of us enjoy.
The rest of what we seeded was lettuce including two trays of New Red Fire which is a delicious red leaf variety. Green and red little gem lettuce evenly split the other five trays we seeded.
Looking at our crop plan this was the smallest week of what we have planned we are seeding until the end of May. The lettuce and cabbage will fill two beds when transplanted and in just two weeks we will be seeding the equivalent of 20 beds of vegetables.
Before we got to seeding on Monday we spent Saturday cleaning weeds out of the greenhouse and organizing the tables.
Additionally we spent a number of hours weeding the perennial herb area that Lloyd, who has farmed the land for the last 20 years, built over time. The small area includes oregano, tarragon, chives and sorrel. We trimmed the dead stems on the oregano and tarragon as well as uncovering the chives.
The rows of chives have some missing spots in them so we decided to split up the other clumps to fill the spaces. Once we split the clumps, we then put the in a tray in the greenhouse and once they grow a bit we will plant them back in the field.
