Getting ready to start farming

It’s been pretty busy getting everything set up for the farm over the last few months since we signed the lease and this Saturday, January 1, is when our lease of the land officially starts. Fortunately we’ve been able to get on the land a little bit already.

Both of us were making numerous trips back from our jobs at other farms this fall but now those have ended and we are able to focus on our own farm full-time. Those jobs were so essential in us learning from talented farmers and improving our skillsets.

A key part of what we’ve been working on is deciding on what we are growing and how much of it. It has been so much fun for both of us being able to decide what to grow and picking out specific varieties we want. Over the last two weeks we have been receiving all the seeds we ordered for the spring and summer in preparation for us to start seeding a few things next week and more every following week.

We are still a few months away from harvesting our first crops but we have planted our first crop which is onions. We seeded them in October and they were planted in early December which is very exciting. By overwintering some onions we hope to get them slightly earlier than when we will the ones we plant in the spring.

After we planted the onions we watered them once and the rain has been constant since then and hopefully we won’t have to water them that often until late in the spring.
