Looking forward to harvesting our herbs!

After spending the last two months dormant our perennial herbs are beginning to grow with the nice weather.

Tarragon (in the picture above), chives and oregano have been living in the same spot for the last decade since Lloyd planted them.

Over the last few weeks we have been cutting back the dead parts on the plants and weeding them so that the new growth can thrive.

We may start to have some tarragon and chives ready to harvest by the end of March or early-April. Once we start having them we should have a constant supply through the fall.

Also we were featured in the Field to Fork column in the Davis Enterprise which you can read here.

We will be at the Davis Farmers Market today and also on Saturday which should be a nice day after some rain late Thursday night and early next week.

Before the rain on Thursday we will be planting all of our seed potatoes. They are the same white potato we grew last year that was delicious and we were able to get the same seed potatoes through the Full Belly and Riverdog Farm order.

In the past few days we have got a good amount of lettuce in the ground along with broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. We have lots of all those crops in the ground that are growing which we are excited to harvest when they are ready.

We also direct seeded lots of carrots, spinach, turnips, radishes, bok choy, arugula and dill. These are all later succession plantings but they won’t be too far behind the earlier plantings with the days warming up.

Fortunately we got all of those crops planted before we lost power Tuesday afternoon when a power pole up the road from the farm fell over due to the high winds. The well on the farm is run by electricity so we couldn’t water any crops in our fields or greenhouse for the rest of the day.

Ahead of the potential rain we did a little extra field work with the tractor in case we can’t get into the field with the tractor for a few days.

In the greenhouse our tomatoes are showing lots of grow over the past week with the warmer weather. At this point last year they were much further along because of the warmer temps but they should be ready this year when we are ready to plan them.
