The first signs of spring!

With all this sun and the temperatures warming up it is starting to feel like spring.

The first flowers on the fruit trees around the farm are blossoming and all the plants are growing quicker.

Everything that was planted in the fall has good roots so now that the days are longer they will grow really well. If we don’t constantly check we may miss a crop that suddenly is ready to harvest.

At this point last year it was much warmer but fortunately we had a winter this year with lots of rain which we didn’t have last year. Now with the warm weather and sunny days the plants are showing significant growth even though we haven’t watered much due to all the rain.

It also means the weeds are waking up from their slumber and getting those dealt with is a key focus when we are not planting, harvesting or seeding.

The only time we water is for transplants and direct seeded crops that went into the ground after all the rains.

Over the last few days we worked on cutting back the dead parts of the oregano and tarragon to allow the new growth that is already visible to continue growing with nothing blocking its path. We have more tarragon cuttings in the greenhouse growing so that we can expand the amount of plants we have.

The greenhouse is getting very full now unless we bring in more tables but fortunately we will be starting to transplant some of the crops in there in the next few days.

Lettuce and spinach will be the first seeds of 2023 that get transplanted with broccoli not far behind.

All of the summer crops we have in the greenhouse are germinating and starting to grow really well!

We’ve been dealing with some birds eating the lettuces when they are small so we’ve had to cover all the lettuces while the birds are on the farm living in the pond. It is not ideal to have to cover them but it is better than all of our lettuces being eaten.
