September Heat
We always want our plants to be thriving as they grow as stress is bad for them but this week with the heat wave that has reached 114 degrees we are focusing on helping them survive.
Focusing on growing strong plants helps them survive during this heat wave but for all the crops we have planted and seeded in the last few weeks we have needed to water them a little bit more often.
We will not be at the Wednesday Davis Farmers Market today as it was canceled due to the heat. We will still be at the Thursday Benicia Farmers Market and Saturday Davis Farmers Market.
Our first leeks of the year will be at both of those markets which is very exciting for us as they have been in the ground for a long time since being transplanted in April.
A lot of our attention this past week has been focused on our fall crops that we are planting and direct seeding. We have spent a lot of time weeding the carrots, radishes, turnips and beets so that they grow really well and are stronger than the weeds.
We also prepared a lot of ground that’s going to be planted with crops in the coming weeks. Lettuce is continuing to be planted all the time although we did push back our scheduled transplanting of lettuce from this week to next since they would not survive in this heat.
We are really enjoying the summer crops with lots of peppers still and eggplants coming in strong. The tomato harvest has slowed down a bit as we are near the end of our last planting of Early Girls and we are only harvesting from two smaller plantings of heirlooms.
There still are a decent amount of cherry tomatoes but they are slowing down a bit, especially our mixed varieties. This heat wave will make a lot of the tomatoes and eggplant drop flowers which is unfortunate.
The end of the green beans is near as we are harvesting our last planting of the season. We should have okra for a bit longer as our second planting is producing really nice.
Our fall greens are coming along well and it won’t be very long before we have some at the market in addition to some lettuce!
Hopefully once we get through the heat wave it will cool down a bit, it says it might be cloudy and 90 degrees on Saturday which will a great break from the heat.
